(X)Ubuntu 12.04 – Java SDK 7 and Google Chrome

From Oracle site download latest Java SE Development Kit 7. Installation goes like this:

  1. Download latest Java SDK
  2. Unpack it
    $ tar -xvf jdk-7u10-linux-i586.tar.gz
  3. Create directory in /usr/lib/jvm
    $ sudo mkdir -p /usr/lib/jvm/jdk1.7.0
  4. Move unpacked files into created directory:
    $ sudo mv jdk1.7.0_10/* /usr/lib/jvm/jdk1.7.0/
  5. Update your alternatives:
    $ sudo update-alternatives –install “/usr/bin/java” “java” “/usr/lib/jvm/jdk1.7.0/bin/java” 1
    $ sudo update-alternatives –install “/usr/bin/javac” “javac” “/usr/lib/jvm/jdk1.7.0/bin/javac” 1
    $ sudo update-alternatives –install “/usr/bin/javaws” “javaws” “/usr/lib/jvm/jdk1.7.0/bin/javaws” 1

Next thing is to create a plugins directory in Google Chrome folder:

$ sudo mkdir /opt/google-chrome/plugins

and after that a link to libnpjp2.so

$ sudo ln -s /usr/lib/jvm/jdk1.7.0/jre/lib/i386/libnpjp2.so /opt/google/chrome/plugins/libnpjp2.so

Here you can check if your Java plugins works 🙂
